| THE RE-BIRTH OF THE 'BARBERSHOP BASH' |
|
Our very own chorus member, Chuck Cheshire and his wife, Jo are organising the re-birth of the Barbershop Bash Caravan and Camping Weekend,
to be held Near Market Drayton in Shropshire from September 12th to the 15th 2008.
Both Chuck and Jo are former "Barbershop Bash Weekenders", and like many others, have sorely missed this great event. Already plans are underway to make the weekend full of fun and song. Over the past couple of years, Chuck and Jo have put on a BBQ for the Telfordaires at the same venue at Market Drayton with huge success. They have received such comments as "fantastic", "unbelievable", "great" and "more of a feast than a BBQ", in fact if they only put half as much effort into the weekend camp as they have with the Telfordaires' BBQ event it's already a winner. The town of Market Drayton is small but has many amenities such as a Morissons supermarket, Argos, Woolworths, Budget Booze, and Iceland stores plus lots of small shops along the high street. Branches of Barclays, Lloyds and Nat West are also readily accessible. Less than two miles from the venue is the small village of Cheswardine. This pretty village boasts a beautiful church, a couple of nice Pubs and a very well stocked Spar convenience store and no matter where you are in the area, you will find very warm, friendly and pleasant welcome from the local people. The venue itself is a small caravan and camping site belonging to The Wharf Tavern, Goldstone Wharf, Near Market Drayton. There are two small caravan and camping fields set alongside the Shropshire Canal. Although the family-run Public House has had touring caravans for many years, it is only in the past year or so that a small number of electric hook up points have been installed and hopefully a few more may be put in over the forthcoming winter. The owners also hope to further improve the site over the next couple of years. The Wharf Tavern itself is a very busy little pub and offers excellent food. Fresh water is available both at the side of the pub, and from a couple of stand pipes on the field. At the rear of the pub is situated a waste disposal point. Although there are no toilets or showers, there will be "Portaloos" on the main event field. All attendees must park by their units and all visitors must park in the allocated area that will be marked out on the field and not the pub car park please. Generators are allowed, but only between 8:00am & 8:00 pm. Permission has been sought and granted for the late use of a generator for the main event area. The weekend camp will kick off on Friday 12th September 2007 from 7.00 am, although those who have a great distance to travel are welcome to arrive on the afternoon of Thursday 11th September and this will hopefully provide more hands to help set up camp. On the Friday morning, all the fun stalls will be up and ready so the kids will be occupied to enable parents to set up and perhaps do some last minute food and booze shopping in Market Drayton. The official festivities start at 6.00 pm on the Friday night, with a welcome from your hosts and, hopefully, the provision of a sort of "not-to-be-kept-to" plan for the weekend, as it will be up to each individual to do what they wish. On the Friday night we will be using the wooden skittle alley. Hopefully teams can be organised and a knockout competition can be played, prizes for which are currently being sourced. This will be followed by gang singing in the main area and the teaching of a few tags followed by more singing and drinking, for those that have the staying power! Saturday will start with the welcoming of new arrivals then the morning is left open for those who wish to do some sightseeing in the area and maybe visit the shopping centres of Telford, Shrewsbury, Newport or Whitchurch, all of which are around 40 minutes drive away or less. Then around 2.00 pm we start the games for the kids and some not so little kids too! This will be followed by a brief break to allow everyone to have a bite to eat and get ready for the evening. Around 7.00 pm, in and around the main area, there will be a mass warm up and sing. We are planning to invite some Choruses from around the local area to join us and possibly perform one or two numbers before getting back to everyone having a sing and a few more tags in our very own afterglow. During the evening the fun stalls will be there for everybody to enjoy, only organised hogging of the games will be allowed. Don't miss the Human Bar Skittles! Also, for a small amount of your hard earned cash, you will be able to savour the infamous Chuckle Burger or Hotdog from your hosts. Sunday, we may be saying goodbye to a few people but the camp will not have finished as the day will be left open for those who just want to relax and refresh themselves prior to another evening of pure Barbershop indulgence. Monday will sadly see the end of camp. But your names will have already been booked for September 2009. Your hosts will be there till the Tuesday so anyone wishing to stay that extra day, just let them know and you will be most welcome. Also please note that for those that have registered at camp and will be staying in small tents overnight on the Saturday and/or Sunday then, for a small fee, Chuck will be cooking his mighty Breakfast Baps at a set time on both Sunday and Monday morning. A treat not to be missed. All units - £8 per night (tent or caravan maximum 5 nights) All cars must be parked by their units, Additional cars by unit - £2 per night per vehicle. All visiting cars must be parked in allocated area - £2 per car. For the very few who get electric hook up, an extra £1 per night will apply. Please remember availability cannot be guaranteed.
